What is it?

The Rocky Mountain Power Solar Incentive Program (the Program) is a program to offer homeowners and businesses in Utah financial incentives to help pay the cost of installing photovoltaic systems, for as long as funds last.

Is my home or business a good candidate?

  • The property should have an existing south-facing exposure, such as the roof of a house, building, garage or shed. Alternatively, the property could have a suitable development site for a frame or pole mount that would provide a south-facing surface on which to mount the panels.
  • Make sure that there is a location on the property for a system facing +/- 90° true solar south (compasses report magnetic south, +/-16° for Utah customers). Ideally, a system should be sited at +/-15° of true south.
  • Make sure that there is minimal shading from surrounding obstructions, such as buildings, trees, poles, satellite dishes or chimneys.
  • Shading is an important consideration that decreases the output of a system. Photovoltaic panels should have their surfaces exposed to the sun’s rays for most or all of the day, with minimal or no shadows from trees, chimneys and cables between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

How do I get started?

This site has all the information you need about solar energy, how to determine if it will work for you, and complete program details. Click on the information links to the left to get started. Then download and submit a Program application. You will be contacted and visited by a Program representative to determine if your site is a good candidate. Once you have received authorization to proceed, you must contract with a qualified Utah (S200, S201 or S202) electrical contractor to install the photovoltaic system. After verification of installation and hook-up of your new meters, you’ll be ready to energize your system and receive your incentive from Rocky Mountain Power. Please note that the purchase or installation of any equipment before application approval will result in disqualification from the program.

What are the incentives?

Rocky Mountain Power is offering a direct incentive of $2.00 per watt toward the installation of a residential photovoltaic system up to 3 kW, or a maximum incentive of $6,000. Non-residential customers can install a photovoltaic system up to 15 kW and receive a maximum incentive of $30,000. These incentives will be available through January 31, 2011, or while funds last.

Incentive funds are based on the number of kilowatts (kW) allotted for the year: Pending. We began accepting applications for the 2010 program year in January, 2010 and the program runs through December 31, 2010 or until incentive funds last. At this time, the available kW for 2010 is pending.
